Willow spilling is used to create a natural physical barrier to preventĀ  river bank erosion or to rebuild and secure a river bank after erosion and is particularly effective on rivers prone to flooding. Willow rods are woven around chestnut stakes. The butt ends of the willow protrude into to the river bank or back filled with soil which encourages them to root and grow.
